Motorists warned against skipping car maintenance

Motorists have been warned that skipping annual car maintenance servicing now could cost them more in the future.

According to Motor Codes at the Office of Fair Trading, credit-crunched drivers who might consider avoiding maintenance payments of around £125 in a bid to save money now could ultimately find themselves paying much higher costs for repairs.

Chris Mason, director of Motor Codes, said: "If you don't carry out scheduled maintenance or fail to have repairs carried out promptly, you could eventually end up paying more."

He added that people who choose to keep their vehicles for longer in particular should adhere to an annual servicing plan because older cars are more likely to encounter running problems.

Moreover, a servicing history could make an older car seem more attractive when the time comes to sell it.

Meanwhile, following a test to compare motor efficiency in different aged cars, the vehicle rental company Europcar advised motorists they could save as much as £800 a year with a newer model.
